Moving On

In more ways than one, I'm moving on yet again.

Most excitingly, and most importantly, we're moving house again. But this time we're buying. The housing market here in NZ has taken a funny turn, and people who were burying money in property as an investment are bailing out. Our landlord is one of them. Not great news when your wife's three months through baking bun number three. But the good news is that it's a buyer's market, and so we decided to buy. Somewhere we plan to stay for the next five to ten years. It'll be nice to have that stability again, and the kids are already planning their treehouse.

Least excitingly, but still of moderate importance, I'm moving domains. It's just too damned confusing for some people that my email address is car@crank.org.uk, but I live... in... New Zealand? I'd say something sarcastic, but when it boils right down to it, this just what happens when we invent a naming scheme to hide 32-bit numbers from humans, and then invest some human geographical significance in those names. When I first arrived in New Zealand I bought crank.org.nz, but even that seemed to confuse people, who kept trying to mail me at crank.org. I'm not sure I get that.

My good friend Elliott had already experienced some of this, having spent a number of years in Switzerland, then back in the UK, and now in the US. He simply moved his permanent address to the nation-agnostic domain we all share. At the time, I quite liked having my own domain, but it's come to be a chore. I'll probably keep it on, but the path of least resistance is to shift a few bits and join him at jessies.org.

Accordingly, my contact details are changing, and if you're one of those people who cares, you might want to take note:
